Can Zoho Beat Google?

The name Zoho is a copyright-friendly misspelling of SOHO, an acronym for the Small Office/Home Office market, which is Zoho's target customer. "We want to be the small companies' IT department," says Raju Vegesna, who works as an evangelist for Zoho. "The whole industry of Web-based productivity software is evolving. It'll be at least four to five years before it goes mainstream, but it's going to happen."

The company says that 250,000 people are using its paid products, Zoho Project and Zoho CRM, and 30,000 people are using its free products--10,000 of whom signed up in the three days following the release of Zoho Notebook.

Gartner's Gall believes that online programs are best suited to people creating Web content or doing heavy collaboration. He uses Zoho Writer to create blog entries and import them into Typepad. And collaborating with Zoho's multi-user spreadsheet is "infinitely easier" than using Microsoft's collaboration tools. "I'm an intensive user of Microsoft Office, and I can't figure out how to use the collaboration tools or insert different objects into Word," says Gall.

Still, it won't be easy to displace Microsoft or to avoid the Google juggernaut. "Office is the crown jewel of Microsoft," says Gall. "I'm skeptical about any company withstanding the Microsoft onslaught." Blogosphere buzz is not the best indicator of future commercial success, since that crowd is dominated by intensive advocates of doing everything online.

Zoho's Vegesna, however, sees a lot of opportunity in new customers around the world. "In India there are eight million new computer users per month, and a similar number of new Internet users," he says, "and they've never heard of Microsoft Office."

    I'd like to understand why this distinguished publication has printed a well-written and detailed piece on Zoho - when there are many other CRM systems with no explanation as to why Zoho MAY BE better than them.

    I started using Zoho on the back of this recommendation. I find most online CRM systems are similar, differing only at the edges. With Zoho there is a significant element of 'unfinishined' business in the application.

    Furthermore there is no doubt the online [only] support is overworked as there are many queries on the support boards that remain unresolved.

    Overall I think this is a great application, at a great price and will continue to use it, but I will continue to test other systems.

      The article is not just abut Zohos CRM.  It describes the hole suite of office apps.  And I believe that Zoho's is the most complete!

        I have used and/or implemented may CRM systems in 25 years of sales. ACT, Saleslogix, Siebel, Salesforce, SugarCRM, Netsuite, etc., etc. I ran across ZohoCRM in a web search as I was looking for a free or low cost CRM tool as I was starting my own business. I signed up and tried it and it is very powerful and does most everything any business would want, except back office acctg as some CRM's are including (e.g. - Netsuite). As compared to the market on a price/performance basis, I challenge anyone to find a better value, period! The value to small operations (e.g. - 3 users or less) is unequaled. When you consider the customizable nature of the application (like Salesforce, Sugar, etc.), it is of even more value.

        $ 12 per user versus $ 65- $ 100 per user for Salesforce (albeit a good app). ZohoCRM wins HANDS-DOWN. I would very much enjoy hearing from anyone who can refute the price/performance value ZohoCRM brings to the market (with facts).

        PS -- Don't forget the multitude of other current and planned SAAS applications offered by Zoho.

  • Compare Zoho against other CMS products

    Zoho does have a very cool featureset and interface for entering content.  If you're looking to compare it against other content management systems, check out http://www.cmsmatrix.org.  They've got like 750+ CMS products to compare so its a sweet site if you have the time! :)

    You could have served your readers much better if you had researched the space a little more. There are many fantastic products in the market that beat Zoho everyday. At Caspio (www.caspio.com) users have built over 50,000 web applications, including custom CRMs without programming.

    Zoho is an excellent tool when you consider the scope and range of services it offers. But in terms of just looking for cheap or free CRM, there are definitely better options. Take a look at www.octopuscity.com. They offer a great free CRM system tied in with a business networking site.
